“I’m so ready for tonight…” Molly mused just before leaping onto her brother’s back. They were supposed to be helping Des close the shop down early, but Molly had been bouncing off the walls that night. Perhaps because she excited to hang out with her friends at a bonfire, but more likely because she’d gotten into the bag of jumbo marshmallows early during a smoke session and the sugar was kicking in.
“Hotdogs, s’mores, beer, some smokes, if this isn’t what life is about...what is?” laughing, she slipped off of Freddie’s back and ran toward Des’ iPod speaker dock and scrolled through until she found “Closing Time” by Semisonic and turned it up almost as loud as it could go. She smirked as she looked over her boys, knowing they would have expected her to put this on and were probably getting sick of what was becoming her tradition, but she knew by the end of the song they would be dancing around just as childishly and belting, “I KNOW WHO I WANT TO TAKE ME HOME!” into whatever was nearest that somewhat resembled a microphone. For Molly, it was a bottle of sunblock, SPF 30.
Molly really tried to be helpful, she got a rag and the windex to wipe down glass displays and the front shop windows, which was nearly the entire shop. Admittedly, she did a bit of a half-ass job that night, which wasn’t like her. Usually, Molly did whatever favors she could for Des to the best of her ability, but tonight her ADHD had the best of her.
“I’m going to get set-up…” Molly announced to the other two, abandoning them to finish up closing the store on their own once her song was over, turning the speakers back down once the intro to the next song started. She shrugged on her hoodie, shoved her bowl in her pocket, and grabbed a bunch of old quilts and blankets that she’d gotten ready earlier in the day and moved outside, still singing to herself under her breath so no one would hear if they happened to be close enough.
Molly started the fire first and then lit up a cigarette as she began to spread the blankets out around the firepit. She pulled the coolers closer to the fire, one was full of alcoholic beverages while the other held sodas and water with a large package of hotdogs and some ketchup and mustard on the very top. She made sure the buns were nearby as well as the s’mores ingredients, the spears to roast the hotdogs and marshmallows, napkins, and some Solo cups in case anyone needed them.
Satisfied with herself, Molly dug into the alcoholic cooler for a beer, cracking it open and plopping herself down on one of the blankets to nurse her cigarette and enjoy the quiet before everyone showed up.
