The water was freezing. Maddie looked out over the ocean as she sat on her board watching the waves far out crash. She wasn't far from shore, but she was far enough away that the silence of the morning seemed to ease around her like a bubble. If she closed her eyes, she might even feel like she was somewhere other than the beach. This is why she enjoyed surfing. It was kind of stupid of her to go out alone, but she enjoyed the solitude. It gave her time to think about things that she normally wouldn't think about around other people. Her fingers moved through her hair pulling it back in a ponytail to keep it out of her face. The chilling air was promising the coming of winter. It wouldn't be like home though. There might not even be snow unless she was lucky.
Taking a deep breath, she started to paddle back to shore letting the icy water run over her arms that were protected by the wet suit. It kept her body warm a bit as she spotted her stuff on the shore. Mattie was the one thing that she was always thinking about. Since they had been little, they had been the best of friends. When her best friend had left her, Madison had felt lost and confused. It had been harsh, but she had gotten through it. Now, they were back together and things would be different.
Once on shore, Madison picked up her board carrying it towards her stuff. It was a beautiful day even for the winter grayness that broke up the sun filled days. Madison loved California, and she loved the water even more. Now, she would just need to get back to her dorm and perhaps get some of her work done. Designing fashion was her life, but she could only do it if she had the muse. Lately, her mind had been clouded by things that she couldn't even process. All she knew was that she was going to design something gorgeous for her best friend and take her out for a night of fun.
Then maybe she would stop worrying about Mattie so much. It really was starting to take over her life how much she worried about the girl. Of course, she wouldn't have had it any other way because after all that was what best friends were for. Sitting on the beach with the towel wrapped around her, she continued to stare into the water wondering what the secret was that kept her so obsessed with the water. She had never been obsessed back home, but here, she couldn't get enough of being on the water with the breeze on her face carrying the salty smells of the ocean. It was much more relaxing than being cooped up at school trying to focus on projects.
