As she lowered herself onto a stool in front of her brightly lit vanity, Jennessa stared at her reflection with a mixture of perplexity and awe. It was almost as if she didn't recognize herself. The girl staring back at her did look like her...sort of and yet there was something different about her reflection's eyes. There was an unmistakable sadness in them that made her want to reach out and hug the girl in the mirror. To reassure her that everything would be ok even when she knew that it wouldn't be.
The revelation that her most recent brush with the law had been the final straw for her parents had come as a surprise to the wayward teen. To be honest, it hadn't even really been the worse thing that she'd been in trouble for. Perhaps she should have heeded the series of threats that they'd been issuing to her for months now, but several months had passed with no action on their part lulling her into a sense of false security. Jennessa had legitimately believed her mother wouldn't allow her stepfather to leave her penniless. However, as she thought back on the past, her mother had a terrible track record of standing up for her kids.
So, perhaps on some level she really should have seen this coming. Being rather prideful Jennessa had blatantly refused to plead with him to reinstate her funds. She knew that was what he wanted and Nessa refused to allow him that satisfaction. The spunky brunette had always been obstinate and she knew that fact was one of many reasons that she and he tended not to get along. The teen would rather crawl on her belly across hot coals than to ask him for anything that he could use against her in the future or hang over her head in the present.
Jennessa plucked two circular shaped pills that closely resembled a popular antacid from her medicine bottle. The only real noticeable difference between TUMS and the pills in her hand was the word 'STARDUST' printed on it. The pills often reminded her of the chewable vitamins that she forced her little sisters to take when they were kids every morning before school. Popping the pills into her mouth, Nessa took several gulps of water from a bottle before placing it back on the vanity. Luckily she went on last, tonight thus allotting her the uninterrupted time that she needed to mentally prepare herself for her performance.
As she stood up from the stool, the room tilted and Jennessa let out a girlish giggle as she made her way to the curtain. Nessa pressed her lips together firmly to keep yet another giggle from escaping her lips as the redheaded dancer named Scarlet shot her a dirty look. The music had changed into the intro for The Pussycat Dolls's Buttons and the nineteen year old knew that was her cue. As the curtains opened she found herself wondering if the stage lights had always been that bright.
Resisting the urge to squint against the light Jennessa took a deep breath and took stage .
