Not that he was obsessed with popularity like Bella was, but college was definitely different from high school, where everyone knew each other, even if they weren't particularly close with certain people. Then again, even though Albuquerque was big, its size couldn't compare to that of San Francisco; moving here changed his physical perception of the world. Not many people smiled at each other when they passed by on the streets like they did at home, and very few people were welcoming to friendly strangers. Mina had joined him and Bella in the city a couple months ago, but he couldn't see her as often as he'd liked. She was busy pursuing her dream career as an actress and searching for a part-time job at a cafe or a bakery, any place where the uniforms were cute and that didn't involve excessive manual labor. By now, it was probably safe to say his sisters were faring much better in this environment than he was. Mina got along fantastically with the locals, and Bella already had her little posse and a stellar modeling career. What was his line? His only friends were the STEM geeks, and even they were too occupied with research to take a night out. Since he was born, Kyle was a nerd, and he was proud. It was better to be smart than stupid, he always said. Mina constantly praised his intellect, while Bella tended to avoid him around campus. Apparently, having a little brother at the same school brings down your reputation... Okay, it was bound to happen, but since not even his only relative who shares the same campus could bear to see him, who could? This wasn't to say he was an absolute loser; he was on good terms with most of his classmates, but he wasn't close enough, per se, for them to text him every night and ask if he wanted to hang out. Finding a place to sit in the cafeteria was usually pretty simple: find his usual group of friends, or if he couldn't, call Mina and ask if she wanted to eat out somewhere. Today, all of his buddies were at a national science championship in Florida and Freshmen weren't allowed to come - Juniors and Seniors only. That was the downside to having all his intellectual friends be upperclassmen, but he was taking Junior-level Physics and Math, so everything had to balance out, even if it wasn't in his favor. After ten minutes of searching for a familiar face that wasn't Bella's or any member of her posse's, he resigned to calling up Mina and proposing lunch at Olive Garden, but as he pulled his phone out of his pocket, he spotted a petite girl with platinum-blonde hair across the cafeteria. Kyle's brown eyes lit up at the sight, vaguely recognizing the girl as one of the students who hailed from the South. But what was her name? It was a type of flower, from what he remembered. Daisy? Rose? No, Daisy, that was it! He hadn't met her personally, but from what people had told him, she was one of the sweetest girls in town. And to Kyle, that made her better than any of the uppity, arrogant people who sat around the food court, carrying their food of silver trays and worrying about spilling food on their clothes and staining their extortionately-priced designer apparel. And from the look on her face, it seemed she could use some company of her own, lest she be waiting for someone else. Deciding to take a chance, the six-feet-tall cutie quickly made his way across the room, weaving around the scramble of the crowd and stepping over any spilled drinks. "Hey there!" he called out with a cheeky grin on his friendly face. "Have a place to sit? I was about to head outside for a table there. Care to join me?" Kyle tilted his head in the direction of the doors leading to the courtyard, slowly walking in hopes that she'd follow. "You're Daisy, right? I'm Kyle, how's it going?" |
